The delivery of effective health and social care services relies on strong leadership and management. This programmer will enable you to develop an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills of the leadership and leadership and management needed for efficient and effective delivery of services in the health and social care environment. We seek to help you to develop as a reflective practitioner and to gain skills in effective communication, critical analysis and continuous learning with a clear understanding of the issues and changes taking place both nationally and locally within health and social care.
The programme is designed to take account of the frameworks developed by the National Health Service and the Department of Health and Social Care and is underpinned by a commitment to the value base of health and social care and seeks to produce graduates who are committed to actively promoting the rights and choices of those who use health and care services.

A range of summative assessment tasks will be used to test the Intended Learning Outcomes in each module. These are indicated in the attached assessment map which shows which tasks are used in which modules.
Students will be supported in their development towards summative assessment by appropriate formative exercises in each module.
The Health and Social Care degree is mapped against the ILM level 5 Leadership and Management Award ensuring you have the leadership skills and qualities employers are looking for. There are many opportunities within the sector for health and social care graduates. These include support management roles in the statutory and non-statutory sectors, including local government and the health boards, such as complaints officer, business manager, training manager, and service manager; and professional roles such as service co-ordinator. You may also wish to consider nongovernment organisations and the independent sectors.
Employment opportunities post study are excellent and Health and Social Care graduates have gained roles as service managers, advocacy, service coordinators, educators and trainers, technician and support workers. Some students progress onto postgraduate study in education, public health, social work, occupational therapy, nursing and research. The work placements experienced throughout the three years gives you an opportunity to explore those areas of health and social care within which you would like to develop your future career.

This course is offered as a four-year programme, including an initial Foundation Year. The Foundation Year will allow you to develop your academic study skills and build confidence in your abilities, identifying your own strengths and development needs for progression onto an undergraduate degree. This course gives you the key transferable academic skills needed to pursue a career in the wellbeing, health, social and voluntary sectors. The aim of this course is to equip learners with both theoretical and practical attributes underpinning Health and Social Science practice. The BSc (Hons) Health and Social Science Degree is designed honours degree for those interested in working within the health and social science sector. Through a mixture of taught and online sources, it will provide the opportunity for those working in, or aspiring to work in public health or health promotion roles to develop and test their knowledge and skills through the core modules in order to inform their practice and enhance career choices. This degree requires learners to actively volunteer/obtain placement hours in a relevant setting which will further enhance their employability skills. Students will be able to make some choices of specialist areas they wish to study through assessment topics that enhance personal development including research skills.

The assessment methods tally according to the aims of each module. Each assessment will be looking for evidence that you have achieved the specific learning outcomes of the module and the broader learning outcomes of the course. Critically analyse health and health issues, alongside health information and data that may be drawn from a wide range of disciplines. Synthesise and critically evaluate coherent arguments from a range of contesting theories relating to health and health and social science issues. Critically reflect on the links between individual experience of health and health issues and the wider structural elements and social processes relevant to health and well-being across the life course. Intellectual/Cognitive Skills On successful completion of the programme a graduate will be able to: Articulate and critically review a broad range of theoretical arguments within a wide range of health and social science contexts and applications. When you finish this degree you’ll be able to pursue a range of careers in the leisure, health and social sectors. This might be in public service, non-government organisations or charities. You’ll be well qualified for positions such as health assessment officers, exercise coordinators and lifestyle coaches. Social policy positions will also be within your grasp, or you may choose to work in the voluntary sector working with people in recovery. As a graduate of this course, you’ll be able to further your studies at postgraduate level. The Health and Social Care BSc (Hons) degree is designed to help you develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to start a professional career in the health and social care sector. The programme is aligned to the standards specified by Skills for Health (the Skills Council for the NHS) and upon completion of the course, you’ll be able to demonstrate to prospective employers that your advanced skills conform to the National Occupational Standards (NOS). This course explicitly supports the development of your academic skills as well as equipping you with the personal and professional skills necessary not only for your studies but also for successful engagement with graduate-level opportunities in the workplace. This course is also fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), so if you choose to specialise in housing you’ll receive free student membership of the CIH. The four-year Health and Social Care (including foundation year) BSc (Hons) degree has a built-in foundation year (Year 0) that provides you with an alternative route into higher education if you don’t have traditional qualifications or can’t meet the entry requirements for an undergraduate degree.

We encourage and will consider applications from mature students who haven’t recently undertaken a formalised course of study at A-level or equivalent, but who can demonstrate workplace, indicating their ability to complete the course successfully. If you have higher qualifications, we also have a 3-year Health and Social Care BA that will allow you to directly start your undergraduate study.

Each year of the course identifies a particular stage of student development. Beginning in year one as The Inquiring Student, the second year casts students as Emerging Practitioners before students become Effective Graduates by the end of the course.
Extended induction periods at the beginning of key modules in Years One and Three support student achievement through greater orientation to course requirements and the establishment of student learning syndicates, developing group cohesion and a sense of community. Two further key aspects of course design supporting achievement are the Personal and Professional Development (PDP) and Academic Skills & Literacy (ALS) modules delivered in each year.
The Personal and Professional Development modules also contribute to the development of student employability. Self-management and empowering activities within these modules develop the values and skills necessary to work effectively in models of service delivery that are themselves empowering.
